Taiwan’s MOFA condemn China distorted UN General Assembly Resolution 2758

The Taiwan’s government push for UN participation in 2024 is based on the main demand to refute the distortion and misuse of UNGA Resolution 2758.

In this regard, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi stressed at the general debate of the 79th session of the United Nations General Assembly at the United Nations headquarters in New York that Resolution 2758 completely solves the issue of the representation of all China, including Taiwan, in the United Nations, and there is no gray area and no room for ambiguity.

In this regard, the Taiwan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) solemnly refuted and demanded that China should stop misleading the international public on 29th Sept.

The Taiwan’s MOFA said a few days ago that China’s three major demands for the proposal this year, including the malicious distortion of UNGA Resolution 2758, have posed a serious threat to the status quo in the Taiwan Strait and peace and stability in the Indo-Pacific region, and the United Nations should face it squarely and take positive action.

Moreover, General Assembly resolution 2758 does not preclude Taiwan’s participation in the United Nations system, and the United Nations should seek appropriate ways to include Taiwan’s participation in order to facilitate Taiwan’s contribution to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). In addition, the United Nations Secretariat should exercise strict neutrality and refrain from invoking General Assembly Resolution 2758 and unduly denying our people and the media the right to visit, attend or cover meetings and events at the United Nations.

According to the website of the Chinese Foreign Ministry on 29th Sept, at the general debate of the 79th session of the United Nations General Assembly, Foreign Minister Wang Yi specifically mentioned the Taiwan issue.

‘Taiwan is an inalienable part of China’s territory, which is both history and reality.’ he said, ‘The “Cairo Declaration” and the “Potsdam Proclamation” clearly stipulate that the Chinese territories stolen by Japan, including Taiwan and the Penghu Islands, should be returned to China, constituting an important part of the post-World War II international order.’

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Taiwan solemnly condemned this on the 29th.

The Taiwan’s MOFA reiterates that the non-subordination of the Republic of China (Taiwan) and the People’s Republic of China is the objective status quo in the Taiwan Strait and a fact recognized by the international community.

General Assembly resolution 2758 does not mention Taiwan, nor does it recognize Taiwan as part of the People’s Republic of China, still less authorize the People’s Republic of China to represent Taiwan in the United Nations, and the resolution has nothing to do with Taiwan, let alone resolve the issue of Taiwan’s representation in the United Nations.

The Taiwan’s MOFA once again stressed that only Taiwan’s democratically elected government can represent Taiwan in international organizations such as the United Nations and other international arenas.

The Taiwan’s MOFA called on China to stop misleading the international community, and also called on the international community to face up to China’s evil intention of unilaterally changing the status quo in the Taiwan Strait by distorting UN General Assembly Resolution 2758 and creating a legal basis for future armed aggression against Taiwan, and actively take countermeasures to jointly safeguard the status quo of peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait and the rules-based international order.
