On 23/10, the Taiwan’s Ministry of National Defense announced that the Chinese aircraft carrier Liaoning sailed north through the Taiwan Strait from the waters near Dongsha on the night of the 22/10, and the outside world was worried about its movements and intentions.
In this regard, Koo Li-hsiung, the minister of Taiwan’s defense department said in an interview with the Legislative Yuan on the morning of 23/10 that since the Liaoning took part in the “Joint Sword Military Exercise”.
The Taiwan military has closely grasped its movements by means of joint intelligence monitoring and reconnaissance, and that the Liaoning is currently passing west of the center line of the Taiwan Strait and heading north.
Koo Li-hsiung pointed out that although the exercise area has been set up for this military exercise, there is no actual latitude and longitude, and there is no restriction on the passage of shipping in the sea and airspace. If the CCP wants to blockade Taiwan, according to the norms of international law, all aircraft and ships must be prohibited from entering the range, and according to the definition of the United Nations, this move is also regarded as an act of war.
Koo Li-hsiung stressed that the output value of maritime transportation in the Taiwan Strait accounts for one-fifth of the world’s total, and if the Chinese Communists carry out a war act of blockade against Taiwan, it will seriously affect the global economy, and the international community cannot sit idly by.
Koo Li-hsiung said: “The exercise or drill is completely different from the actual lockdown, and the impact on the entire international community is completely different. Think about it, the output value of maritime transportation in the Taiwan Strait accounts for about one-fifth of the global transportation output value, reaching 2.45 trillion US dollars, and if he really carries out such a kind of work as defined by international law, the impact is very serious, and the international community cannot sit idly by.”
The reporter asked if the communist army really blockaded Taiwan, would the US military rush to help?
Koo Li-hsiung said that he could not answer hypothetical questions, but he stressed that a military conflict in the Taiwan Strait would have a serious impact on the global economy, including the United States, Japan, South Korea, the Indo-Pacific, and even China itself, and the international community could not sit idly by.
