Taiwan has prohibited government employees from using DeepSeek, a newly launched Chinese AI model, due to concerns about potential data leaks to the Chinese government.
The Ministry of Digital Affairs (MODA) announced that DeepSeek AI, being a Chinese ICT product, raises national security risks related to data breaches. This ban affects staff from central and local government bodies, public schools, state-owned enterprises, and other semi-official organizations, though specifics on enforcement were not detailed.
Additionally, the restriction extends to personnel involved in critical infrastructure projects and government-funded foundations. MODA referenced a 2019 regulation by the Executive Yuan that restricts the use of ICT products that could threaten national cybersecurity. This decision comes shortly after various governments around the world began limiting employee access to the software.
