Washington D.C. – The United States Department of State has updated its fact sheet on U.S.-Taiwan relations, removing a key phrase stating that the U.S. “does not support Taiwan independence.” The change, made public on Thursday, has been welcomed by Taiwanese officials as a sign of strengthened support.

The previous version of the fact sheet stated the U.S. opposed “any unilateral changes to the status quo from either side; we do not support Taiwan independence; and we expect cross-strait differences to be resolved by peaceful means.” The updated version omits the specific line about not supporting independence.

The fact sheet now reads, “We oppose any unilateral changes to the status quo from either side. We expect cross-strait differences to be resolved by peaceful means, free from coercion, in a manner acceptable to the people on both sides of the Strait.”

Other changes include updated language regarding Taiwan’s participation in international organizations and a new reference to cooperation on technology and semiconductor development. The American Institute in Taiwan (AIT) stated that these changes are part of routine updates and reiterated the U.S. commitment to its “One China” policy, guided by the Taiwan Relations Act, the Three Joint Communiques, and the “Six Assurances” to Taiwan. An AIT spokesperson also stated that “We have long stated that we oppose any unilateral changes to the status quo from either side”

Taiwan’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Lin Chia-lung expressed gratitude to the U.S. State Department, noting the “positive, Taiwan-friendly wording” in the updated fact sheet. He reaffirmed Taiwan’s commitment to strengthening its self-defense capabilities and deepening cooperation with the U.S. and other like-minded countries.

A source indicated that this update signals the U.S. views Taiwan as a vital partner in the Indo-Pacific region and is pursuing the relationship more actively. They argued that it counters Beijing’s claims that Taiwan is solely an internal matter for China.

The last time a similar change occurred was in May 2022, but the phrase was later reinstated after protests from Beijing.
