Lai Ching-te: China should take back its territory from Russia, Russian responsed

Maria Zakharova, Spokeswoman of Russia Foreign Ministry

Taiwan President Lai Ching-te (賴清德) said in an exclusive interview with TV on Sunday (01/09) that if China wants to safeguard its territorial sovereignty, it should recover the land occupied by Russia, refuting China’s statement that “recovering Taiwan is to safeguard territorial sovereignty”.

The UK’s newspaper “Guardian” pointed out that Lai’s argument accentuated China’s double standards for territory and sovereignty.

Maria Zakharova, Spokeswoman of Russia Foreign Ministry, issued a strongly worded response on Tuesday (03/09), pointing out that there is no territorial dispute between China and Russia, and the “Treaty of Good Neighborliness, Friendship and Cooperation” signed in 2001 has indicated that the two sides have given up any territorial claims to each other. Russia adheres to the one-China principle, and Taiwan has no right to speak for Beijing.

Shakarova said that some people may be interested in the rhetoric of marginal politicians, but not Russia. He can bark wantonly at the instigation of United States, but this is not good for him or Taiwan.” He also called on Lai Ching-te to “take good care of the island’s economy and respond constructively to China’s plan for peaceful reunification.”
