In response to the detention of  Ko Wen-je , chairman of the People’s Party and former mayor of Taipei, over the Jinghua City case, Chen Binhua, spokesman for the Taiwan Affairs Office of the PRC’s State Council, alleged yesterday (11th Sept.) that since Lai Ching-te came to power, he has repeatedly manipulated judicial and administrative means, used public weapons for private purposes, and created “green terror” with the aim of hunting down and killing figures from all walks of life who do not support the DPP and do not agree with Taiwan independence.

After a one-month summer recess, the Taiwan Affairs Office of the State Council resumed holding a regular press conference on 11 Sept. The first two questions raised by the mainland media at the news conference were aimed at President Lai Ching-te’s cross-strait policy. Later, when asked about his views on Ko Wen-jee’s case, Chen Binhua made the above statement.

In response to Chen Binhua’s remarks, the Taiwan’s Mainland Affairs Council (MAC) said that the Republic of China is a free and democratic system of government that practices checks and balances and separation of powers, the people’s rights are protected by due process of law, the judicial system handles cases independently, and no political party or administrative department can interfere and control them.

The MAC stressed: The mainland side should not look at Taiwan with its own narrow eyes, still less should it try to see the seams, because this will only expose its shortcomings and make the world laugh and be generous.

At yesterday’s press conference, some media asked whether the Taiwan Affairs Office of the State Council has received any clues since it announced the e-mail address for Taiwan diehard separatists in early August. Chen Binhua said, “We will conscientiously verify and screen the clues we receive, handle them in accordance with laws and regulations, and resolutely crack down on a very small number of Taiwan independence diehards and their separatist activities.”

In response to Chen Binhua’s remarks, the MAC said that as far as the Beijing authorities are concerned, not agreeing with reunification is Taiwan independence supporters. The CCP’s relevant laws and regulations are vaguely defined, and they have set up whistle-blowing websites to encourage whistleblowing, and any Taiwan can be convicted, and its so-called “only targeting a very small number of Taiwan independence diehards” is obviously just a lie.

The MAC called on the mainland side to stop repeatedly intimidating and threatening the Taiwan people and undermining the benign interaction and development of the two sides of the strait.
