United Kingdom Foreign Secretary David Lammy and United States Secretary of State Antony Blinken launched the “UK-US Strategic Dialogue” in London on the 10th, and the joint statement issued by the two sides on 14th Sept. reaffirmed that peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait are indispensable for the security and prosperity of the international community.
The statement also called for a peaceful resolution of the cross-strait issue. During the Strategic Dialogue, the United Kingdom and the United States emphasized the security and economic interconnectedness of the Euro-Atlantic and India-Pacific regions, and committed to explore new opportunities to coordinate practices and work with others to support a free and open Indo-Pacific region. Britain and the United States also reiterated their opposition to any unilateral act that seeks to change the “status quo” by force or coercion.
Blinken and Lamy held the UK-US Strategic Dialogue in London. The United Kingdom Foreign Office said the new strategic dialogue framework would deepen the “special relationship” between the United Kingdom and the United States since the Second World War, and the two sides intend to hold it annually in the future.
This year’s dialogue, held on the 10-11th Sept., touched on issues such as support for Ukraine, security in the Middle East, free and open Indo-Pacific, foreign misinformation threats, malicious cyberspace actors, organized crime, economic resilience and more. The statement also mentioned the importance of United Kingdom Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s talks with United States President Joe Biden at the White House on the 13th. Both sides have emphasized in advance that the White House talks will be an in-depth dialogue at the strategic level.
In a joint statement released on the 14th after the London Strategic Dialogue between Lammy and Blinken, the two sides mentioned that the Australia-UK-US Trilateral Security Partnership (AUKUS) demonstrates the continued collective commitment of all parties to a free and open Indo-Pacific region.
With regard to China, the two sides expressed concern about the dangerous and destabilizing behavior of Chinese ships against Philippine ships in the South China Sea, and expressed particular concern about China’s support for Russia’s military industry.
In terms of supporting Ukraine, the United Kingdom and the United States mentioned in the statement that they will cooperate to support the Euro-Atlantic integration process of Ukraine, Moldova and countries in the Western Balkans (including EU member candidates such as Albania, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Black Macedonia and Serbia, as well as Kosovo, which applied for membership in December 2022), and stressed that Ukraine’s path to becoming a member of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) is irreversible.
