Taiwan licensed pagers used in Mossad bomb attacks

by Jake Sanders, Editor

Reports from senior Lebanese security sources suggest that Israel’s Mossad spy agency inserted a small amount of explosives into 5,000 pagers with parts supplied to a company called BAC Consulting by Taiwan and assembled in Hungary. Pagers were ordered by the Lebanese militant group Hezbollah five months prior to Tuesday’s explosions. The licenser of the pagers is Gold Apollo Electronics, Taiwan, which left it’s ”made in Taiwan” markings on inside the devices.

These pagers, used for wireless communication by many members of Hezbollah, detonated simultaneously throughout Lebanon and parts of Syria on Tuesday, resulting in at least nine fatalities and numerous injuries. Nearly 100 explosion incidents were recorded in Syria. We contacted Francis Tsai, a spokesperson for the Israeli trade and cultural office in Taipei, she did not provide any immediate comments regarding the attack.

The Israeli Mossad has long been recognized for its covert operations across the globe, and its activities in Asia have increasingly come under scrutiny. Singapore serves as a strategic hub for Mossad, providing a discreet base from which to conduct intelligence operations throughout the region. The agency’s involvement in countries like Burma, Japan, and the Philippines reflects its broader agenda of monitoring threats and gathering intelligence on groups perceived as hostile to Israeli interests. Notably, such operations often involve a blend of high-tech surveillance and traditional espionage tactics, allowing Mossad to maintain a significant presence in a region characterized by complex geopolitical dynamics.

One of the most high-profile incidents attributed to Mossad’s operations in Asia was the assassination of Fadi al-Batsh, a Palestinian engineer and a member of Hamas, who was killed on April 21, 2018, in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. As he headed to a mosque for dawn prayers, masked assassins on a motorcycle approached him and opened fire, executing the hit with precision before quickly disposing of the shell casings and fleeing the scene using false Middle Eastern passports. Hamas later claimed al-Batsh as a commander within its military wing, highlighting the significance of his death to the organization. This incident not only underscores Mossad’s willingness to engage in lethal operations far from its borders but also illustrates the agency’s ongoing commitment to countering perceived threats by any means necessary, even in the heart of Southeast Asia.
