The European Parliament has passed a resolution asserting that UN Resolution 2758 does not affect Taiwan’s ability to participate in the UN or other international organizations. The resolution also denounces any unilateral changes to the status quo in the Taiwan Strait, passing with 432 votes in favor, 60 against, and 71 abstentions.
The resolution criticizes China’s ongoing military threats against Taiwan, particularly recent military exercises near the island. It states that any unilateral efforts to alter the status quo, especially through force, will not be tolerated and will provoke a strong response.
Furthermore, the resolution clarifies that UN Resolution 2758 “takes no position on Taiwan,” and firmly rejects the People’s Republic of China’s attempts to distort historical facts and international norms. The European Parliament urged the EU and its member states to facilitate Taiwan’s meaningful involvement in international organizations, such as the WHO and Interpol, and requested that the UN allow access for Taiwanese individuals, including journalists.
Additionally, it condemned Chinese tactics like cyber warfare and disinformation aimed at undermining trust in Taiwan’s democratic institutions, advocating for enhanced collaboration between the EU and Taiwan to combat these threats.
While reaffirming the EU’s commitment to its “one China” policy as the basis for EU-China relations, the resolution reflects a growing European stance on the issue. European Commissioner Nicolas Schmit emphasized the strategic importance of peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait for both regional and global security.
In his speech, Schmit highlighted that UN Resolution 2758, which is notably brief and does not mention Taiwan, transitioned representation in the UN from the representatives of Chiang Kai-shek to those of the People’s Republic of China. He welcomed the Parliament’s focus on this topic, underscoring the need for constructive engagement in cross-strait relations to foster peace.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Taiwan noted the significance of Schmit’s address as it marked the European Commission’s first official stance on the matter, calling for more nations to collaborate with the EU and the US to counter Beijing’s misinterpretation of the resolution and to maintain peace in the Taiwan Strait.
