Invasion boats being built by China

China is constructing at least five new specialized barges, which are believed to be intended for amphibious operations, according to Naval News. Defense analysts have observed an uptick in this type of vessel at the Guangzhou shipyard in southern China, with reports of at least three to possibly five or more unique barges.

These barges feature exceptionally long road bridges extending from the front, making them particularly suitable for landing Chinese troops in Taiwan and facilitating the unloading of numerous tanks onto Taiwanese roads. Naval News confirmed this analysis through various sources and discussions with military experts.

Each identified barge has a road span exceeding 120 meters, enabling access to coastal roads or solid ground behind the beach. The rear of these barges has an open platform for docking and unloading other vessels. Some are equipped with “jack-up” legs for stability in adverse weather, allowing them to function as piers for unloading trucks and tanks from cargo ships.

The barges resemble the Mulberry Harbors—temporary British coastal structures used during the Allied Normandy invasion in World War II—constructed rapidly and designed differently. While a smaller prototype may have emerged in 2022, this new batch has only recently been observed.

The development of these specialized barges is an indicator that defense analysts are monitoring for early signs of a potential invasion. Despite the possibility of civilian use, the sheer number of these barges—much greater than previously recorded civilian vessels—casts doubt on that theory. The various designs further suggest that they are not for commercial purposes but are tailored for rapidly transporting heavy equipment ashore.

Recently, Chinese President Xi Jinping stated in his New Year’s address that the “reunification” of China with Taiwan is inevitable, emphasizing that people on both sides of the Taiwan Strait are one family and that no one can disrupt their ties.
