During a recent visit to Taipei, Czech Senator Pavel Fischer emphasized the importance of smaller nations recognizing their roles amidst escalating global tensions. Speaking at the Czech Hub in Taiwan, a collaboration involving the European Values Center for Security Policy and the Czech-Taiwanese Business Chamber, Fischer highlighted the need for Taiwan to bolster its societal resilience against information warfare and manipulation.
Fischer, who previously ran for president in 2018, addressed reporters, asserting that the Czech Republic, as a NATO member, should broaden its focus beyond the rhetoric of U.S. leadership and actively contribute to NATO’s objectives of establishing collective deterrence.
He pointed out that Taiwan has made commendable strides in protecting freedom of speech and political integrity, particularly evident during recent elections. Furthermore, the senator referenced a resolution passed by the Czech Senate last year that advocated for Taiwan’s inclusion in organizations like the World Health Assembly, noting its significance in the face of continued military threats from China.
Critiquing Europe for historically underestimating China’s growing influence, Fischer warned of a precarious situation as China and Russia seek to exploit transatlantic divisions. He stressed that security is foundational to prosperity, stating that economic growth and social well-being must be pursued in tandem with safeguarding freedoms.
When questioned about potential cooperative defense supply chains between Taiwan and Europe, Fischer highlighted the urgency of supply chain security, noting discussions that took place during his previous visit in 2020. He underscored Taiwan’s expertise in semiconductor design and manufacturing, urging for deeper collaboration between the Czech Republic and Taiwan.
Fischer also mentioned Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC), which is constructing a factory in Dresden, Germany, closely located to the Czech Republic. He posited that as TSMC establishes its presence, it would pave the way for increased investment opportunities in the Czech region.
